Sticker charts! Here’s a good article about how to set one up.
But even better, here are some tips from our inimitable ECE Aunt Monica!
1. Start with super small increments for stickers. Don’t suck on thumb for five minutes=sticker. Next day, 7 minutes, etc until you build up to long period of time.
2. Give replacement behavior as the reward. In this case, something fun to suck on that is appropriate such as popsicle or lollipop
3. Never feel bad about starting completely over to start chain of positive reinforcement again. It must be very strong and fast.
4. Encourage self-monitoring. Example: Tell me when you wake up if you didn’t suck your thumb. Could they lie? Yes. But oh well, who cares. If they lie, they lie but it takes you out of the equation rather than setting yourself up to be some weird thumb sucking monitor. Focus is back on teamwork and the goal.
